Mr Myers said: if life is just there're blue sky without beautiful rain, only happiness without sadness, joy without pain, so, this life is not life - at least not for the life of people.

Will inevitably encounter setbacks, life. It is a grain of small little sand on the blueprint of life, meet it, sweeping it bravely; It is a note sewage, will at any time into life in the sea; It is a piece of dark clouds hide the lighthouse, keep the ship lost to life the shore; It is on the way of life, let a person stumbling forward in the life on the road!

Setbacks, let a person lose, let people feel fear, let a person at a loss. In the dawn of the victory to illuminate the earth, setbacks, once frustrated success will not belong to you, only persistence, courage, with optimism in the face of setbacks, only to leave a valuable experience, then hands victory is available.

Setbacks, it let me grow up. MAO yisheng once said, difficulties can only be intimidated by a coward idlers, and victory always goes to those who dare to climb the summit of science. In the journey of growth, with a good attitude about it, but the value of your experience, are rising. Bravely through the clouds, you can see light; Put an end to the sewage, the sea is clear and clear; Kicked a stumbling block, life is still promising. Setbacks with me, let me grow up in the experience.

Failing the exam, I'll careful analysis to the wrong reasons, to remember the correct answer, the next exam, experienced I will be the small bamboo shoots in wind and rain, the higher the longer, when I am wrong joke, the friendship between friends, I will remember the lesson, saying the wrong thing no longer next time. Argue with parents when something good, parents would tell me something good or bad, has the experience and won't buy things natural on the profiteers.

Ladies and gentlemen:

  Hello!

First of all I want to thank you very much host Sa Beining, thanks for inviting me to China column group, thank you for inviting me to participate in this program today,to share with you the story of my life.I want to share with you might not just about basketball,in fact, which can be applied to everyone#39;s work and life.No matter what profession you choose,as long as you have a dream we must dedicate ourselves to chase,to find your dream to pursue it.

I grew up in Detroit, civilian family,my father, who was a few words,he is a businessman,my father told me a very important point, which I saw from him,my father taught me,every day To dream of every effort. That is,after he gets up every day to wear clothes,he would tell himself, whether you are sick or you feel tired, but he always best.

Many people think that one day I woke up to find themselves suddenly grow up to 2 m 05,I could have scored NBA is also very natural thing, but nobody recognizes become NBA players rely on the persistence and perseverance. In fact,I always rely on persistence and perseverance in the whole process only to make their dream of eventually entering the NBA.When I was 12 years old when my height is 1 m 8,was as thin as a pencil, does not want to be with a girl I was dating or kissing me because they think I looked funny.

One day I chat with small partners, and I told them that one day I will go to the NBA game, you guess what they react, they laughed at me,they laughed at my dream. They told me that Sean you too thin, and you run fast, jump high is not enough, you absolutely can not go to the NBA to play, you absolutely can not fulfill your dreams. As a 12-year-old boy I heard so I feel very sad because they do not recognize my dream. So at that time I think I saw most of my own thoughts.Every morning I got up and looked in the mirror,I asked myself:Sean, you are ready every day?Today you have to make every effort to get close to dream a little, too.

Brush your teeth in my sleep at night,I also looked in the mirror to ask myself,do not want to think yesterday, tomorrow, just think today I was not away from my dream,my goal from almost a little bit of it?Most of the time I can say yes.I have every day in practice continue to practice,I progress little by little, when I was fourteen years old,I would have been nearly two meters tall. After high school,I gradually began to succeed, then there is a basketball player named Chris Webber,he was the NBA#39;s first draft,so I was a high school, when I was fourteen or so,five years old people around me told me that you can not always as good as Chris, because Chris is very strong, but also a great effort, but you run fast, jumping ability does not work, you will never be his.But I was a kid, have heard such things, then how do I do it?

I looked in the mirror said to myself,"You know, just your own ideas is the most important",so I#39;ll continue to work hard.In my high school graduation,I want to prepare to go to college, and I#39;ve won three statewide winner, but I#39;m still the nation#39;s high schools throughout the year inside a star team,I was the most high school students nationwide great basketball player.

I later decided to enter into an American academic and college basketball very well, and that is Duke University. You certainly can not think of when I apply for Duke, people say to me.They say:"Oh,Sean,you#39;re a basketball playing well, but you#39;re in college, you should not be so good, because you slower, jump is not high, and you are not strong enough, you basketball consciousness is not strong enough."These words are my twelve years old, fourteen, five years old when I heard. So how do I do that before,I was standing in the mirror,I asked myself, are you ready?

You go to those who question your proof that they are wrong,so I#39;ll continue to struggle. After the end of my four years of college,I decided to join the NBA.I went to the NBA,people questioned again, they said Shawn your college is a good player, but you definitely can not be a good professional player,it is very surprising, very shocking it.And how I do it?I looked in the mirror told myself:Now is the time you continue to work hard.

So after twelve years,I stood in front of you,I#39;ve won two NBA championships, and I played in great teams there, and I make my dreams come true.I think my story, the most wonderful part is to tell you that is not what I woke up one night I went to the NBA arena, not the case.I have every small step along the way, until today#39;s success,I was squeezed off, someone said I was not good enough, some people say I will never succeed, when my success in basketball, people always want to call me a basketball star, but for my own words in addition to basketball there are a lot of things.

I am very lucky that my parents are very emphasis on my education, but I have some friends and teachers, they will say:"Sean, you do not need to be a good student,as long as you play good basketball on the line."I say,"No,I do not like this,I want to be a good student because I like to learn, like reading,I like to learn new things."the entire four years of high school in my time,my grades only got a B,the other is A.

I remember when I was little also played football, was a great stadium, should be a similar tournament game, and still fresh.I was 12 years old,I was very nervous,I was afraid that they will make mistakes, but when I run with the ball always side kick, how far are running, you know my face is about sixty thousand spectators,I can not Faced with such a scene,I am sad to cry,but at least I tried,I tried, though I might fail,I fail in the harvest, may be greater than the gain from the success of the.

My coach is one of the best the United States,he called Krzyzewski,he once said:"You#39;d better be ready the next game of the match,as on the basketball court, there are a lot of things will happen, for example,In the course of your dribble, suddenly what was tripped shoes, everyone laughing at you,so many TV stations in the country live your site for all to see, then, how would you do it?you you sit there crying, would say I was too ashamed tripped, everyone laughing at me?No,certainly not like this.then how should you do it?

you just stand up and continue to the next race, the next a game is the most important."I certainly want to be the next game in the tournament, which is a very important mode of thinking. If we are able to form such a mode of thinking, make you a lifetime, you will always be able to continue to lay a game.Seize the next opportunity, and the realization of the next target. When we have to have passion and enthusiasm to face the challenges before, and if you have been so insistent, you will definitely succeed,I#39;m sure you will succeed.

I want to thank everyone arrived,we hope to be able to ask some very interesting questions, sharp gentle questions. Then I#39;m ready to answer your questions。

  thank you very much,thank you!

someone said “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”. i dont know who wrote these words, but ive always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want it to be. we are all in the position of the farmers. if we plant a good seed ,we reap a good harvest. if we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.

we are young. “how to spend the youth?” it is a meaningful question. to answer it, first i have to ask “what do you understand by the word youth?” youth is not a time of life, its a state of mind. its not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips or supple knees. its the matter of the will. its the freshness of the deep spring of life.

youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite , for adventure over the love of ease. this often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20 . nobody grows old merely by a number of years . we grow old by deserting our ideals. years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul . worry , fear , self –distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust .

whether 60 of 16 , there is in every human being s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of whats next and the joy of the game of living . in the center of your heart and my heart theres a wireless station : so long as it receives messages of beauty , hope ,cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young .

a poet said “to see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour. several days ago, i had a chance to listen to a lecture. i learnt a lot there. id like to share it with all of you. lets show our right palms. we can see three lines that show how our love.career and life is. i have a short line of life. what about yours? i wondered whether we could see our future in this way. well, lets make a fist. where is our future? where is our love, career, and life? tell me.yeah, it is in our hands. it is held in ourselves.

we all want the future to be better than the past. but the future ca n go better itself. dont cry because it is over, smile because it happened. from the past, weve learnt that the life is tough, but we are tougher. weve learnt that we cant choose how we feel, but we can choose what about it. failure doesnt mean you dont have it, it does mean you should do it in a different way. failure doesnt mean you should give up, it does mean you must try harder.

as what i said at the beginning, “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”. the past has gone. nothing we do will change it. but the future is in front of us. believe that what we give to the world, the world will give to us. and from today on, lets be the owners of ourselves, and speak out “we are the world, we are the future.”

Winston Churchill presented his Sinews of Peace, (the Iron Curtain Speech), at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri on March 5, 1946 .

President McCluer, ladies and gentlemen, and last, but certainly not least, the President of the United States of America:

I am very glad indeed to come to Westminster College this afternoon, and I am complimented that you should give me a degree from an institution whose reputation has been so solidly established. The name "Westminster" somehow or other seems familiar to me. I feel as if I have heard of it before. Indeed now that I come to think of it, it was at Westminster that I received a very large part of my education in politics, dialectic, rhetoric, and one or two other things. In fact we have both been educated at the same, or similar, or, at any rate, kindred establishments.

It is also an honor, ladies and gentlemen, perhaps almost unique, for a private visitor to be introduced to an academic audience by the President of the United States. Amid his heavy burdens, duties, and responsibilities--unsought but not recoiled from--the President has traveled a thousand miles to dignify and magnify our meeting here to-day and to give me an opportunity of addressing this kindred nation, as well as my own countrymen acrothe ocean, and perhaps some other countries too. The President has told you that it is his wish, as I am sure it is yours, that I should have full liberty to give my true and faithful counsel in these anxious and baffling times. I shall certainly avail myself of this freedom, and feel the more right to do so because any private ambitions I may have cherished in my younger days have been satisfied beyond my wildest dreams. Let me however make it clear that I have no official mission or status of any kind, and that I speak only for myself. There is nothing here but what you see.

I can therefore allow my mind, with the experience of a lifetime, to play over the problems which beset us on the morrow of our absolute victory in arms, and to try to make sure with what strength I have that what has gained with so much sacrifice and suffering shall be preserved for the future glory and safety of mankind.

Ladies and gentlemen, the United States stands at this time at the pinnacle of world power. It is a solemn moment for the American Democracy. For with primacy in power is also joined an awe-inspiring accountability to the future. If you look around you, you must feel not only the sense of duty done but also you must feel anxiety lest you fall below the level of achievement. Opportunity is here and now, clear and shining for both our countries. To reject it or ignore it or fritter it away will bring upon us all the long reproaches of the after-time. It is necessary that the constancy of mind, persistency of purpose, and the grand simplicity of decision shall rule and guide the conduct of the English-speaking peoples in peace as they did in war. We must, and I believe we shall, prove ourselves equal to this severe requirement.

President McCluer, when American military men approach some serious situation they are wont to write at the head of their directive the words "over-all strategic concept". There is wisdom in this, as it leads to clarity of thought. What then is the over-all strategic concept which we should inscribe to-day? It is nothing lethan the safety and welfare, the freedom and progress, of all the homes and families of all the men and women in all the lands. And here I speak particularly of the myriad cottage or apartment homes where the wage-earner strives amid the accidents and difficulties of life to guard his wife and children from privation and bring the family up the fear of the Lord, or upon ethical conceptions which often play their potent part.

Mtakes and errors are the dciplined true which we advance in life。 Mtakes are great teachers。 Success es to those who are willing to rk making mtakes in the pursuit of their goals and aspirations, and who are able to learn from those mtakes。 And in order to learn from mtakes you must be willing to pay for them。

Mtakes can be enormously valuable, but when you try to get others to pay for your mtakes, then you deprive yourself of the opportunity to learn from them。 When something goes wrong,it's usually very easy to find someone else to blame, but what does that really acplh?

Much of the value of mtakes es from the fact that they demand a cost that must be paid。 The person who learns the most from a mtake the person who pays the price for that mtake。

When you make a mtake, the lastthing you want to do run away from it。 You need to accept it because you can learn a lot from it。 The mtake has been made,so make the most of it。 Pay the price, learn the lesson, and grow that much stronger。

When you make a mtake, don't look back at it long。 Remember the reason for it,and then look forward。 Mtakes are lessons of wdom。 The past cannot be changed。 The present still in your power。 Take full advantage of your mtakes to achieve your goals and aspirations。

  How to Be Popular

Most people would like to be popular with others, but not everyone can achieve this goal. What is the secret to popularityIn fact, it is very simple. The first step is to improve our appearance. We should always make sure that we stay in good shape and dress well. When we are healthy and well-groomed, we will not only look better but also feel better. In addition, we should smile and appear friendly. After all, our facial expression is an important part of our appearance. If we can do this, people will be attracted to our good looks and impressed by our confidence.

Another important step is developing more consideration for others. We should always put others first and place their interests before our own. It's also important to be good listeners; in this way people will feel comfortable enough to confide in us. However, no matter what we do, we must not gossip. Above all, we must remember to be ourselves, not phonies. Only by being sincere and respectful of others can we earn their respect. If we can do all of the above, I am sure popularity will come our way.

  Learn How to Say No

We've all been taught that we should help people. It is the right thing to do and will make us popular with others. It may even win us favors in return. However, we must be realistic. We can't say yes to every request. If we did, we would fail or go crazy for sure. Sometimes we simply don't have the time to help. In this case, we must know how to say no politely.

When we need to say no, here is one method we can try. First, we should tell the truth. If we really can't do something, we should just say so. Second, we should remember to refuse requests politely. We must communicate clearly, but must also be sincere and sympathetic. A true friend will understand. Finally, we must not feel guilty about saying no. Sometimes refusing others is the right thing to do. It can save ourselves, and them, a lot of trouble. In short, we cannot please everyone all the time. Refusing favors is a part of life.

How to Sell Yourself

In this competitive society it is essential to know how to sell yourself in order to get the job you want. That means you must be able to market your best features and present yourself in the best light. After all, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

There are several things you can do to project a good image in an interview. First of all, look like a winner. Dress conservatively and well, and you'll look like you're going to the top. Second, communicate clearly. Consider each question carefully and respond with total honesty. Remember to make eye contact and maintain good posture. You need to look attentive but also at ease. Third, have a positive and assertive attitude. It's important to appear confident of your ability and optimistic about your future. Finally, be prepared. Present a professional resume and be ready to explain everything in detail.

By following the advice above, you are bound to make a good impression on potential employers. Then you will be able to choose

the best opportunity for you and take that first step towards success.

Responsibility is a Badge of Honour for Youth

Facing this audience on the stage, I have the exciting feeling of participating in the march of history, for what we are facing today is more than a mere competition or contest. It is an assembly of some of China's most talented and motivated people, representatives of a younger generation that are preparing themselves for the coming of a new century.

I'm grateful that I've been given this opportunity, at such a historic moment, to stand here as a spokesman of my generation and to take a serious look back at the past 15 years, a crucial period for every one of us and for this nation as well.

Though it is only within my power to tell about my personal experience, and only a tiny fragment of it at that, it still represents, I believe, the root of a spirit which has been essential to me and to all the people bred by the past 15 years.

In my elementary years, there was a little girl in the class who worked very hard but somehow could never do satisfactorily in her lessons.

The teacher asked me to help her, and it was obvious that she expected a lot from me. but as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, I always tried to evade her so as to get more time to enjoy myself. One day before the final exam, she came up to me and said, "Could you please explain this to meI want very much to do better this time. " I started explaining, and finished in a hurry.

Pretending not to notice her still confused eyes, I ran off quickly. Nat surprisingly, she again did very badly in the exam. And two months later, at the beginning of the new semester, word came of her death of blood cancer. No one ever knew about the little task I failed to fulfill, but I couldn't forgive myself. I simply couldn't forget her eyes, which seem to be asking, "Why didn't you do a little more to help me, when it was so easy for youWhy didn't you understand a little better the trust placed in you, so that I would not have to leave this world in such pain and regret"

I was about eight or nine years old at that time, but in a way it was the very starting point of my life, for I began to understand the word "responsibility" and to learn to always do my duties faithfully and devotedly, for the implications of that sacred word has dawned on me: the mutual need and trust of people, the co-operation and inter-reliance which are the very foundation of human society.

Later in my life, I continued to experience many failures. But never again did I feel that regret which struck me at the death of the girl, for it makes my heart satisfied to think that I have always done everything in my power to fulfill my responsibilities as best I can.

As I grew up, changed and improved by this incident and many other similar ones, I began to perceive the changes taking place around me and to find that society, in a way, was in its formative years like myself. New buildings, new commodities and new fashions appear every day.

New ideas, new information, new technologies. People can talk with each other from any corner of the earth in a matter of seconds. Society is becoming more competitive.

Words like individuality and creativity are getting more emphasis and more people are rewarded for their hard work and efforts. Such is the era in which this generation ,grows and matures.

Such is the era in which this generation will take over the nation from our fathers and learn to run it. Yet in the meantime, many problems still exist.

We learn that crimes take place in broad daylight with crowds of people looking on and not assisting. We hear that there are still about 1 million children in this country who can't even afford to go to elementary schools while enormous sums of money are being squandered away on dinner parties and luxury cars.

We buy shoddy medicines, or merely worthless junk in the name of medicines, that aggravate, rather than alleviate our diseases since money, many people believe, is the most important thing in the world that must be made, even at the expense of morality and responsibility.

Such an era, therefore, determines that we are a generation with a keener sense of competition and efficiency and a greater readiness to think critically and act creatively.

Such an era, furthermore, demands, that we are a generation with a clear perception of our historical responsibility and an aggressive will to take action and solve the problems. History has long been preparing these qualities in this generation and it is now calling us forward to give testimony to our patriotism and heroism towards this nation and all humanity.

Standing here now, I think of the past 15 years of my life as an ordinary student. Probably I'll be an ordinary man for the rest of my life. But this doesn't discourage me any, for I know that with my sense of responsibility and devoted efforts to always strive, for the best, it's going to be a meaningful and worthwhile life that I will be living.

Standing here now, I think of the past 15 years of this nation, which has achieved greatness that inspired millions of people of my age, most of whom will not attain fame or prestige and only a few of whom will be remembered by posterity. But that doesn't discourage us any, because we

know that the world watches, the world listens, the world is waiting to see where this nation will be heading in a time of rich opportunities and fierce competition.

I can't ever forget that little girl in my class who couldn't had the same opportunities as any of us here to enjoy a wonderful life today and a hopeful world tomorrow.

It is the sacred responsibility of this generation to face up to the challenges of the new century and to devote our sweat and blood, our wisdom and passion, to the historic cause of making this nation a greater and happier land for every one of us.

We are not going to evade that responsibility. We are going to let people down. And people, far and near, will hear of us. Frost will be brought to their backbones and tears to their eyes when our stories are told and retold, So let us go forth, my fellow members of this luckily chosen generation, and meet the new century in victory and glory.

  Knowing the Consequences of Choice

Over the past Spring Festival, I got involved in a family dispute. Right before I got home, four satellite channels of CCTV were added to the 14 channels we had already had. In prime time at night, they all had interesting shows. Therefore, the five of us-my parents, my sisters and I-had to argue over what to watch. Finally, we agreed that we should watch the "most interesting" programme... If we

  could agree what that was.

However, all of us there remember that for a long time after we had TV, there were only one or two channels available. The increase in options reveals an important change in our life: the abundance of choice.

Fifteen years ago we all dressed in one style and in one colour. Today, we select from a wide variety of designs and shades.

Fifteen years ago, we read few newspapers. Today, we read English newspapers like the China Daily and the 21st Century, as well as various Chinese newspapers.

Fifteen years ago, English majors took only courses in language and literature. Today, we also study Western culture, journalism, business communications, international relations, and computer science.

The emergence of choices marks the beginning of a new era in China's history; an era of diversity, of material and cultural richness, and an era of the rebirth of the Chinese nation.

When I was in my 20s, I saw my very first psychotherapy client。 I was a Ph。D。 student in clinical psychology at Berkeley。 She was a 26—year—old woman named Alex。 Now Alex walked into her first session wearing jeans and a big slouchy top, and she dropped onto the couch in my office and kicked off her flats and told me she was there to talk about guy problems。 Now when I heard this, I was so relieved。 My classmate got an arsonist for her first client。 (Laughter) And I got a twentysomething who wanted to talk about boys。 This I thought I could handle。

But I didn't handle it。 With the funny stories that Alex would bring to session, it was easy for me just to nod my head while we kicked the can down the road。 "Thirty's the new 20," Alex would say, and as far as I could tell, she was right。 Work happened later, marriage happened later, kids happened later, even death happened later。 Twentysomethings like Alex and I had nothing but time。

But before long, my supervisor pushed me to push Alex about her love life。 I pushed back。

I said, "Sure, she's dating down, she's sleeping with a knucklehead, but it's not like she's going to marry the guy。"

And then my supervisor said, "Not yet, but she might marry the next one。 Besides, the best time to work on Alex's marriage is before she has one。"

That's what psychologists call an "Aha!" moment。 That was the moment I realized, 30 is not the new 20。 Yes, people settle down later than they used to, but that didn't make Alex's 20s a developmental downtime。 That made Alex's 20s a developmental sweet spot, and we were sitting there blowing it。 That was when I realized that this sort of benign neglect was a real problem, and it had real consequences, not just for Alex and her love life but for the careers and the families and the futures of twentysomethings everywhere。

There are 50 million twentysomethings in the United States right now。 We're talking about 15 percent of the population, or 100 percent if you consider that no one's getting through adulthood without going through their 20s first。

Raise your hand if you're in your 20s。 I really want to see some twentysomethings here。 Oh, yay! Y'all's awesome。 If you work with twentysomethings, you love a twentysomething, you're losing sleep over twentysomethings, I want to see — Okay。 Awesome, twentysomethings really matter。

So I specialize in twentysomethings because I believe that every single one of those 50 million twentysomethings deserves to know what psychologists, sociologists, neurologists and fertility specialists already know: that claiming your 20s is one of the simplest, yet most transformative, things you can do for work, for love, for your happiness, maybe even for the world。

This is not my opinion。 These are the facts。 We know that 80 percent of life's most defining moments take place by age 35。 That means that eight out of 10 of the decisions and experiences and "Aha!" moments that make your life what it is will have happened by your mid—30s。 People who are over 40, don't panic。 This crowd is going to be fine, I think。 We know that the first 10 years of a career has an exponential impact on how much money you're going to earn。 We know that more than half of Americans are married or are living with or dating their future partner by 30。 We know that the brain caps off its second and last growth spurt in your 20s as it rewires itself for adulthood, which means that whatever it is you want to change about yourself, now is the time to change it。 We know that personality changes more during your 20s than at any other time in life, and we know that female fertility peaks at age 28, and things get tricky after age 35。 So your 20s are the time to educate yourself about your body and your options。

So when we think about child development, we all know that the first five years are a critical period for language and attachment in the brain。 It's a time when your ordinary, day—to—day life has an inordinate impact on who you will become。 But what we hear less about is that there's such a thing as adult development, and our 20s are that critical period of adult development。

But this isn't what twentysomethings are hearing。 Newspapers talk about the changing timetable of adulthood。 Researchers call the 20s an extended adolescence。 Journalists coin silly nicknames for twentysomethings like "twixters" and "kidults。" It's true。 As a culture, we have trivialized what is actually the defining decade of adulthood。

Leonard Bernstein said that to achieve great things, you need a plan and not quite enough time。 Isn't that true? So what do you think happens when you pat a twentysomething on the head and you say, "You have 10 extra years to start your life"? Nothing happens。 You have robbed that person of his urgency and ambition, and absolutely nothing happens。

And then every day, smart, interesting twentysomethings like you or like your sons and daughters come into my office and say things like this: "I know my boyfriend's no good for me, but this relationship doesn't count。 I'm just killing time。" Or they say, "Everybody says as long as I get started on a career by the time I'm 30, I'll be fine。"

But then it starts to sound like this: "My 20s are almost over, and I have nothing to show for myself。 I had a better résumé the day after I graduated from college。"

And then it starts to sound like this: "Dating in my 20s was like musical chairs。 Everybody was running around and having fun, but then sometime around 30 it was like the music turned off and everybody started sitting down。 I didn't want to be the only one left standing up, so sometimes I think I married my husband because he was the closest chair to me at 30。"

Where are the twentysomethings here? Do not do that。

Okay, now that sounds a little flip, but make no mistake, the stakes are very high。 When a lot has been pushed to your 30s, there is enormous thirtysomething pressure to jump—start a career, pick a city, partner up, and have two or three kids in a much shorter period of time。 Many of these things are incompatible, and as research is just starting to show, simply harder and more stressful to do all at once in our 30s。

The post—millennial midlife crisis isn't buying a red sports car。 It's realizing you can't have that career you now want。 It's realizing you can't have that child you now want, or you can't give your child a sibling。 Too many thirtysomethings and fortysomethings look at themselves, and at me, sitting across the room, and say about their 20s, "What was I doing? What was I thinking?"

I want to change what twentysomethings are doing and thinking。

Here's a story about how that can go。 It's a story about a woman named Emma。 At 25, Emma came to my office because she was, in her words, having an identity crisis。 She said she thought she might like to work in art or entertainment, but she hadn't decided yet, so she'd spent the last few years waiting tables instead。 Because it was cheaper, she lived with a boyfriend who displayed his temper more than his ambition。 And as hard as her 20s were, her early life had been even harder。 She often cried in our sessions, but then would collect herself by saying, "You can't pick your family, but you can pick your friends。"

Well one day, Emma comes in and she hangs her head in her lap, and she sobbed for most of the hour。 She'd just bought a new address book, and she'd spent the morning filling in her many contacts, but then she'd been left staring at that empty blank that comes after the words "In case of emergency, please call 。。。 。" She was nearly hysterical when she looked at me and said, "Who's going to be there for me if I get in a car wreck? Who's going to take care of me if I have cancer?"

Now in that moment, it took everything I had not to say, "I will。" But what Emma needed wasn't some therapist who really, really cared。 Emma needed a better life, and I knew this was her chance。 I had learned too much since I first worked with Alex to just sit there while Emma's defining decade went parading by。

So over the next weeks and months, I told Emma three things that every twentysomething, male or female, deserves to hear。

First, I told Emma to forget about having an identity crisis and get some identity capital。 By get identity capital, I mean do something that adds value to who you are。 Do something that's an investment in who you might want to be next。 I didn't know the future of Emma's career, and no one knows the future of work, but I do know this: Identity capital begets identity capital。 So now is the time for that cross—country job, that internship, that startup you want to try。 I'm not discounting twentysomething exploration here, but I am discounting exploration that's not supposed to count, which, by the way, is not exploration。 That's procrastination。 I told Emma to explore work and make it count。

Second, I told Emma that the urban tribe is overrated。 Best friends are great for giving rides to the airport, but twentysomethings who huddle together with like—minded peers limit who they know, what they know, how they think, how they speak, and where they work。 That new piece of capital, that new person to date almost always comes from outside the inner circle。 New things come from what are called our weak ties, our friends of friends of friends。 So yes, half of twentysomethings are un— or under—employed。 But half aren't, and weak ties are how you get yourself into that group。 Half of new jobs are never posted, so reaching out to your neighbor's boss is how you get that un—posted job。 It's not cheating。 It's the science of how information spreads。

Last but not least, Emma believed that you can't pick your family, but you can pick your friends。 Now this was true for her growing up, but as a twentysomething, soon Emma would pick her family when she partnered with someone and created a family of her own。 I told Emma the time to start picking your family is now。 Now you may be thinking that 30 is actually a better time to settle down than 20, or even 25, and I agree with you。 But grabbing whoever you're living with or sleeping with when everyone on Facebook starts walking down the aisle is not progress。 The best time to work on your marriage is before you have one, and that means being as intentional with love as you are with work。 Picking your family is about consciously choosing who and what you want rather than just making it work or killing time with whoever happens to be choosing you。

So what happened to Emma? Well, we went through that address book, and she found an old roommate's cousin who worked at an art museum in another state。 That weak tie helped her get a job there。 That job offer gave her the reason to leave that live—in boyfriend。 Now, five years later, she's a special events planner for museums。 She's married to a man she mindfully chose。 She loves her new career, she loves her new family, and she sent me a card that said, "Now the emergency contact blanks don't seem big enough。"

Now Emma's story made that sound easy, but that's what I love about working with twentysomethings。 They are so easy to help。 Twentysomethings are like airplanes just leaving LAX, bound for somewhere west。 Right after takeoff, a slight change in course is the difference between landing in Alaska or Fiji。 Likewise, at 21 or 25 or even 29, one good conversation, one good break, one good TED Talk, can have an enormous effect across years and even generations to come。

So here's an idea worth spreading to every twentysomething you know。 It's as simple as what I learned to say to Alex。 It's what I now have the privilege of saying to twentysomethings like Emma every single day: Thirty is not the new 20, so claim your adulthood, get some identity capital, use your weak ties, pick your family。 Don't be defined by what you didn't know or didn't do。 You're deciding your life right now。 Thank you。

  to choose, to give up

a poet leads me to a branch road: on one se, there are lots of sweet apples, lovely and charming; on the other, there is a patch of thorn, what hes behind the succeof struggling against the thorn is a splend palace. i deeply know that if i choose the apples, i will give up a precious opportunity of becoming a queen; while if i choose to challenge, i have to say farewell to the apples. which one should i choose?

just like the branch road, we have to make a lot of choices during our lifetime. it is usually consered that we are choosing what to gain, to own, but in my opinion, we are just choosing to give up.

  choosing to be a teacher means giving up the life as rich as a busineman;

choosing to be a top student means giving up much leisure time in front of the tv.

sure, it’s a torture, but we must judge carefully what is more important, then give up the others. don’t think of them any more, just focus all your spirit on what you are doing.

i myself, who is standing here, have already chosen to challenge in such a great competition, so i have to give up ten days of normal es in school and relaxation without pressure. but i am still pleased, because giving up properly makes me stick to my choice.

let’s return to our branch road, which one will your choose? i choose to challenge here!
